How to Use This Calculator
Find the right amount of food for your dog
Step 1 Enter Info
1
Enter your dog’s weight
Current weight in kg or lbs. Use ideal weight if your dog is overweight — feed for the weight they should be, not what they are.
2
Select activity level
Sedentary (1-2 short walks). Moderate (30-60 min daily). Active (1-2 hrs vigorous). Working (all-day activity). Be honest about actual activity.
3
Select life stage
Puppies need 1.5-2x adult calories. Seniors need 10% less. Pregnant dogs need 60% more. Lactating mothers need 2.5x normal.
4
Read feeding amounts
Daily calories, cups of kibble (~350 kcal/cup), grams of food, cans of wet food, and recommended meals per day. Adjust to your specific food’s calorie content.
💡 Important: Check your specific food’s calories per cup (on the bag). If your kibble is 400 kcal/cup instead of 350, reduce cups by ~15%. Our estimate uses 350 kcal/cup average.
Step 2 Feeding Tips
1
Use a measuring cup
Eyeballing leads to overfeeding. Use an actual measuring cup, not a drinking glass or scoop. Consistency prevents weight gain.
2
Count treats as calories
Treats should be <10% of daily calories. A Milk-Bone is 40 kcal. Five treats = 200 kcal = an entire meal’s worth. Reduce food accordingly.
3
Adjust by body condition
These are starting points. If your dog gains weight, reduce 10%. If ribs become visible, increase 10%. Weigh monthly and adjust.
4
Transition food slowly
When changing food, mix 25% new / 75% old for 3 days, then 50/50, then 75/25, then 100% new. Sudden changes cause digestive upset.
💡 Tip: If your dog is overweight, feed for the TARGET weight, not current weight. A 30 kg dog that should be 25 kg should eat portions for a 25 kg dog.

Dog Feeding:
The Complete Guide

Feeding your dog the right amount is one of the most important things you can do for their health. Overfeeding is the #1 cause of obesity in dogs, which shortens lifespan by 1-2 years. Underfeeding causes malnutrition and weakness. This guide explains the science of canine nutrition and how to feed correctly.

The Calorie Formula

// Daily Energy Requirement
RER = 70 × (weight_kg0.75) • MER = RER × activity × life stage
15 kg moderate adult: 70 × (15^0.75) × 1.4 × 1.0 = ~700 kcal/day

Activity Factors

ActivityFactorDescription
Sedentary1.2xIndoor, minimal walks
Moderate1.4x30-60 min daily walks
Active1.6xRunning, hiking, play
Very Active1.8xAgility, sport, fetch

Real-World Scenarios

Scenario 1: Average Adult Dog. James has a 20 kg Beagle, moderate activity, adult. Daily need: 870 kcal. That is 2.5 cups kibble split into 2 meals (1.25 cups morning and evening). His kibble is 380 kcal/cup, so he adjusts to 2.3 cups. He weighs monthly and the Beagle maintains 20 kg.

Scenario 2: Growing Puppy. Maria’s 8 kg, 4-month-old Lab puppy needs 920 kcal (puppy factor 2x). That is 2.6 cups split into 3 meals. More calories per kg than an adult because of growth demands. She uses large breed puppy food with controlled calcium. Use our Puppy Growth Calculator to track weight.

Scenario 3: Overweight Dog. David’s 35 kg Lab should be 30 kg. He feeds for 30 kg at moderate activity: 1,070 kcal (not 1,200 for 35 kg). Combined with daily walks, the Lab loses 0.5 kg/month safely. Target: reach 30 kg in 10 months.

Scenario 4: Nursing Mother. Priya’s 25 kg dog is nursing 6 puppies. Lactation factor 2.5x. Daily need: 2,450 kcal — 7 cups kibble per day. She feeds 4 meals/day and keeps fresh water available at all times. Use our Dog Pregnancy Calculator for timeline.

💡 Key insight: 56% of dogs in developed countries are overweight. The primary cause is not lack of exercise — it is too much food and too many treats. A single dental chew (80 kcal) for a small dog is equivalent to a human eating a cheeseburger. Track total daily calories including treats.

// Frequently Asked Questions
Common Questions About Dog Feeding
How much food should I feed my dog? +
Based on weight, activity, life stage. 15 kg moderate adult: ~700 kcal/day = 2 cups kibble. Calculator gives exact amounts.
How do I calculate daily calories? +
RER = 70 x (weight_kg^0.75). Multiply by activity (1.2-2.0) and life stage factor. Calculator does this automatically.
How many cups of kibble per day? +
Daily calories / calories per cup. Average kibble: 350 kcal/cup. Check your bag for exact. 700 kcal dog = 2 cups.
How often should I feed my dog? +
Puppies under 4 mo: 3x/day. Older puppies and adults: 2x/day. Splitting prevents bloat and maintains energy.
Do puppies need more food? +
Per kg, yes. 2x adult calories because of growth. A 10 kg puppy eats as much as a 20 kg adult.
Feed senior dogs less? +
Usually 10-20% less (slower metabolism). But some seniors losing weight need more. Consult vet for specific adjustments.
How do I know if overfeeding? +
Feel ribs without pressing hard, visible waist from above, belly tucks up from side. If not, reduce 10%. Weigh monthly.
Wet vs dry food amounts? +
Wet: ~250 kcal/can. Dry: ~350 kcal/cup. Need more wet by volume due to water content. Mixing is fine, adjust totals.
Does activity level matter? +
Yes. Working dogs need 60-80% more than sedentary. Adjust to actual activity, not breed reputation.
Pregnant dog feeding? +
60% more in late pregnancy. Lactation: 2-3x normal. Use puppy food for extra nutrition. Nursing is the highest calorie need.
