How to Use This Calculator
Calculate your weighted course grade
Step 1 Add Grades
1
Name each assignment
Homework 1, Quiz 3, Midterm, Final Project — whatever helps you identify it.
2
Enter score and total
Your points earned and total possible. 42/50, 88/100, etc. The calculator converts to percentage automatically.
3
Set weight percentage
How much this assignment counts toward your final grade. Check your syllabus for weights. Exam: 30%, Homework: 20%, etc.
4
Assign a category
Group by type: Homework, Quizzes, Exams, Projects, Labs, Participation. The category breakdown shows your average per type.
💡 Weights tip: Your syllabus lists category weights (e.g. Exams 40%, Homework 20%). Divide the category weight among assignments. 3 exams worth 40% total = ~13.3% each.
Step 2 Understand
1
Weight vs equal grading
Weighted: a 30% exam matters 3x more than a 10% quiz. Equal: all assignments count the same. Most courses use weighted.
2
Partial weight is OK
If you have only entered 60% of weight (some assignments not graded yet), the calculator gives your current grade from what is graded so far.
3
Focus on heavy weights
A 1% improvement on a 30% exam is worth 3x more than a 1% improvement on a 10% quiz. Study accordingly.
4
Plan ahead
Use our Final Grade Calculator to see what score you need on remaining work to hit your target grade.
💡 Tip: Enter assignments as you get them back throughout the semester. This gives you a running grade so you can adjust effort before it is too late.

Calculating Your Course Grade:
The Complete Guide

Most students do not know their actual grade until report cards arrive. By then, it is too late to adjust. This calculator lets you track your grade in real-time throughout the semester so you always know where you stand and can focus effort where it matters most.

The Weighted Grade Formula

// Weighted Average
Grade = Σ(Score % × Weight) ÷ ΣWeights
(90% × 20 + 80% × 80) / 100 = (18 + 64) / 100 = 82%

Standard Grading Scale

LetterPercentageGPA
A93-100%4.0
A-90-92%3.7
B+87-89%3.3
B83-86%3.0
C73-76%2.0

Real-World Scenarios

Scenario 1: Midterm Check-In. James has graded: Homework avg 92% (20% weight), Quiz avg 85% (10%), Midterm 78% (30%). Current grade from 60% of weight: 83.7% (B). Remaining: Final 30%, Project 10%. He needs 90%+ on remaining work to reach an A-. Use our Final Grade Calculator for exact targets.

Scenario 2: Heavy Exam Weighting. Maria’s course: Exams 60%, Homework 20%, Participation 20%. She has 95% homework and 100% participation but 72% exam average. Overall: 79.2% (C+). Despite perfect homework, her grade is pulled down by exams. She needs to focus study time on exam prep, not homework perfection.

Scenario 3: Extra Credit Boost. David scored 108/100 on a project (extra credit). Weight: 20%. His project contributes 108% × 20% = 21.6 weighted points instead of the normal 20 maximum. This 1.6% boost could push his overall from B+ to A-.

Scenario 4: Tracking Throughout Semester. Priya enters each assignment as she gets it back. Week 3: 2 items graded, 15% weight, grade 91%. Week 8: 8 items, 55% weight, grade 87%. Week 14: 14 items, 90% weight, grade 84%. She sees the downward trend early and adjusts study habits by week 8. Use our Study Time Calculator to plan recovery.

💡 Key insight: Most students spend equal time on all assignments regardless of weight. This is a mistake. A 30% final exam deserves 3x the preparation of a 10% quiz. Calculate the “points per hour of study” for each assignment weight and allocate time accordingly.

Common Questions About Grade Calculation
How do I calculate my weighted grade? +
Multiply each score % by its weight. Add all. Divide by total weight. (90% x 20 + 80% x 80) / 100 = 82%.
What is a weighted grade? +
Different assignments count different amounts. Exams 40%, homework 20%, projects 30%, participation 10%. Heavier items impact grade more.
Percentage to letter grade? +
A: 93-100, A-: 90-92, B+: 87-89, B: 83-86, B-: 80-82, C+: 77-79, C: 73-76, D: 60-69, F: below 60. Some schools differ.
What if weights don't add to 100%? +
Calculator divides by total assigned weight, not 100. At 70% weight entered, it shows grade from that 70%. Remaining is ungraded.
How do categories work? +

What grade do I need on the final? +
Use our Final Grade Calculator. Enter current grade, final weight, and target grade. It tells you the exact score needed.
How does extra credit work? +

Weighted vs unweighted? +
Unweighted: all equal. Weighted: multiplied by importance. Most college courses use weighted. This calculator is weighted.
How many items can I add? +
Up to 20. Add homework, quizzes, exams, projects, labs, participation. Each has custom name, score, total, weight, category.
Does this calculate GPA? +
Shows GPA equivalent of your percentage (85% = B = 3.0). For full semester GPA across courses, use our GPA Calculator.
